Brexit EU negotiating team profile: EU Deputy Chief Brexit Negotiator Sabine Weyand

Newington's Tiffany Burrows and Katie Milne profile Sabine Weyand, the EU's Deputy Chief Brexit Negotiator.

Age: 52

A German Cambridge alumn, Weyand completed her PhD thesis on the European Commission’s Common Transport Policy and walked straight into a job in the EU Directorate-General for Industry. The ultimate EU bureaucrat, she has held a plethora of roles.

Experience: 24 years

Weyand has spent over two decades in European institutions, including as a Director in the Secretariat-General in charge of policy coordination on economic and financial affairs, adviser to former Commission President Barroso, Cabinet Member for the South and South East Asia trade commissioner.

Red tape rating: 5/5

She gets full marks because she’s only ever worked in EU institutions. She’s also worked in fields that are technical and complex, such as the Automobile regulation and international trade.

Contention rating: 1/5

Compared to her more controversial boss Michel Barnier, Weyand is relatively unknown in both Britain and Europe. A career bureaucrat, she is unlikely to say anything that is politically insensitive.
