Council By-Election News

Conservatives lose control of council but gain ground elsewhere!

Basingstoke and Deane - Ind Gain
The Conservatives lost the Bramley & Sherfield Ward to an Independent candidate, as their vote share slumped by 24%. The loss comes as a blow to the Conservative Group, who have lost overall control of the council as a result.

Watford - LibDem Hold
A strong hold for the Liberal Democrats in Tudor Ward, as the Conservatives delivered a 9% swing to overtake Labour into second place, albeit still 381 votes adrift from winning.

Corby - Labour Hold
Labour retained a commanding majority in the Beanfield Ward but with their vote share slashed by the now second-place Conservative candidate. UKIP previously polled quite strongly locally but with no candidate this time, it was left to the Conservatives to soak up their vote, and they did just that - delivering an 11% swing from Labour and reducing a previous four-figure majority to just 321.

Election 2020 - London and more

Whatever happens in Westminster and whether we have a General Election or not, we know that we face a busy election day in May 2020. The headline contest is for the Mayor of London, where Labour incumbent Sadiq Khan now faces a challenge from Independent (and former Conservative) Rory Stewart, alongside Conservative Shaun Bailey, Liberal Democrat Siobahn Benita and Green Sian Berry.

Elsewhere, directly-elected mayors in Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, West Midlands, Bristol, Liverpool and Salford will face election, alongside 40 Police and Crime Commissioners in England and Wales and over 2,500 council seats in 118 English local authorities.

Newington will be running a series of political events and briefings as we count down to Election 2020 - if you would like more information or would like to be invited to our events, please contact us to register your interest.
