10 observations on the General Election

10 observations on the General Election

Newington's Mark Glover rounds up his ten observations on the General Election.

1. Corbyn was the most authentic candidate and better campaigner and therefore expanded his political appeal.

2. Labour's team combined events and digital support to create excitement around their campaign, which brought out the youth vote.

3. The Labour ground war, staffed by its huge membership - identified and dragged out the Labour vote.

4. The Tories depressed turnout from their older vote through their manifesto launch.

5. Whilst the Tories talked about Brexit and strong leadership. The electorate focused on Labour's economic message around austerity and May refusing to debate Corbyn undermined their 'strong and stable' message.

6. In Scotland, the Unionist parties voted tactically to defeat the Nationalists. A cleared pro-union message from Labour could have seen more seats won.

7. The electorate didn't see the need for an election and punished the incumbents.

8. Scotland voted against a second referendum on independence by almost 2/1.

9. The Liberal Democrats talked about overturning Brexit and hardly anyone was listening.

10. Labour exceeded expectations but still finished second.
