Look ahead: Brexit talks resume, and the Repeal Bill reaches Committee Stage

Newington's Sarah Mann outlines what to expect over the next fortnight.

Never far from the heart of the political agenda in 2017, Brexit is set to dominate both within and outside of Parliament. Talks between the UK Government and the EU are set to resume next Wednesday, ahead of the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill reaching Committee Stage on 14 November. The two day Commons debate should be more than a mere formality, with Brexit Secretary David Davis signalling that the Government is prepared to accept amendments to the Bill – but keeping observers guessing on which these might be.

Addressing the Lords EU Select Committee this week, Davis also conceded that the withdrawal agreement will “probably” favour the EU financially, amidst the revelation that preparations to leave the EU have already cost the Government half a billion pounds as it prepares for a range of outcomes, including the possibility of a “no deal” scenario. In other words, plenty of fuel for what promises to be a fiery debate on the nation’s favourite issue.
