Look ahead: Key Brexit votes in the Commons

Newington's Joe Knight looks at what to expect over the next fortnight.

With one week to go before recess, Prime Minister Theresa May faces more battles over Brexit, as she attempts to steer another two pieces of Brexit-related legislation through the House of Commons.

The Customs Bill is a technical piece of legislation that gives the British Government the legal powers to implement its own customs regime, something that is currently not necessary given that customs is governed by EU law. However, the Bill has been something of a lightning rod for opposition to a 'hard' Brexit, with amendments tabled by pro-European MPs that would effectively keep the UK in the existing Customs Union with the EU. Up to 20 Conservative MPs have reportedly told the Prime Minister they will back such an amendment, but it remains to be seen whether the deal agreed by the Cabinet at Chequers last Friday has done enough to satisfy them.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister also faces rebellion from Eurosceptic MPs on Tuesday, as The Sun reports that they have tabled four amendments to the Trade Bill that would prevent the Prime Minister from implementing the proposals for a customs regime she agreed with the cabinet at Chequers on Friday. The Trade Bill is another piece of largely technical legislation, creating the legal powers for the Government to amend domestic legislation to fulfil obligations arising from future trade agreements the UK may negotiate after Brexit. The Prime Minister will hope she can see off this rebellion as opposition to the Chequers agreement from Eurosceptic Conservative MPs mounts.
